- A Modeling Summit was held June 26, 2007 on the UNH campus in Durham, NH. This one-day event, sponsored by the Center, NOAA and the Dispersants Working Group (DWG), was a unique opportunity to bring modelers together to discuss common elements, state-of-the-art models in use, and discover ways to improve spill response modeling.
- The Portsmouth Harbor Emergency Response Initiative met on June 27, 2007 at the New England Center on the UNH campus in Durham, NH. The Center is leading an effort to develop a web-based data delivery platform to support emergency response. This effort was in collaboration with other NOAA-funded centers located at UNH including those focused on coastal and ocean mapping, coastal and estuarine environmental technology, ocean observing and environmental database management. The platform was able to assimilate static mapping elements (e.g., resources at risk, nautical charts, and baseline data) with real-time data sets (e.g., weather conditions, and connections to observational systems). Portsmouth Harbor, NH was selected as the site for this demonstration project because of its proximity to UNH; its diverse shoreline development (e.g., industry, residential, protected habitats, tourist / recreational use); and the active partnership among the two states abutting the harbor, industry, and environmental agencies and NGO's.

On March 28-29, 2007 in Durham, NH, the Center and the Emergency Response Division teamed up with SINTEF, a Norwegian research group, to design a NOAA-specific experiment to better understand oil interactions with and transport through sea ice. The experiment will focus on the mechanisms in which dissolved components of oil (also, the toxic components) are transported through dynamic sea ice through a freezing and thawing cycle to better quantify routes of exposure to the sensitive Arctic food web. The experiment will also quantify the extent and rates of biodegradation of the oil components, and it will support a larger field-based experiment in Norway in 2009. The data collected will improve NOAA's predictive capabilities when oil is spilled into ice-infested waters, a scenario that will increase as oil exploration activities expand in the northern latitudes, and as northern routes become more accessible to shipping.
