Cascadia Rising: Was NOAA Prepared?

Tuesday, December 6, 2016
Civic Center in Silver Spring, MD

This seminar/table top exercise was sponsored by NOAA's Office of Response and Restoration, particularly the Gulf of Mexico Disaster Response Center.

CRRC facilitated the seminar/table top exercise for NOAA staff of a 9.0 magnitude earthquake along the Cascadia Subduction Zone fault with subsequent tsunamis and aftershocks directly impacting Washington and Oregon. The extent of the scenario was adapted specifically for NOAA’s exercise needs and included some aspects of the Federal Emergency Management Agency Cascadia Rising 2016 functional exercise.

Objectives

  1. Outline, assess, and evaluate the severity of the event to NOAA staff, facilities, resources, and missions.
  2. Evaluate the capabilities and limitations of the Emergency Notification System (ENS) and any other notification systems in place to ensure the safety and status of NOAA staff.
  3. Discuss the current Concept of Operations (CONOPS) Plan and determine associated gaps/areas for improvement.
